Our festivals are incomplete without sweets. Today we bring for you the easy recipe of ukadiche modak. These are traditional indian dessert dumplings made with rice flour and coconut jaggery stuffing and it is specifically made during the indian festival of ganapathi chaturthi. Ukadiche modak is the most popular variety of modak that comes from the Maharashtra Cuisine.
The word ukadiche means ‘steamed’. So in simple English “Ukadiche Modak” means steamed modak. It is believed that Modak is Bhagwan Ganesha’s favorite sweet hence he is also called “Modakpriya”. In the Southern Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Modak is called Kozhukattai or Kolukattai and is made during Vinayaka Chaturthi. Although this steamed dumpling is made with coconut jaggery stuffing, we can add dry fruits also.

Modak Recipe Ingredients
Modak Ingredient 1) Two tsp ghee
Modak Ingredient 2) Two cup coconut, grated
Modak Ingredient 3) One cup jaggery
Modak Ingredient 4) ½ tsp cardamom powder
Modak Ingredient 5) Two cup water
Modak Ingredient 6) ½ tsp salt
Modak Ingredient 7) Two cup rice flour
Modak Ingredient 8) Dry Fruits (Optional)







Preparation before Modak Recipe
1. Prepare stuffing by heating1 tsp ghee and 2 cup grated coconut. Sauté until coconut turns aromatic. Now add 1 cup jaggery and keep cooking it on medium flame until it melts. Now add ½ tsp cardamom powder and mix well. Your stuffing is ready, keep it aside.
2. Prepare rice dough by taking 2 cup water in a pan. Add to it ½ tsp salt and 1 tsp ghee and let water boil. Now add 2 cup rice flour and mix until the rice flour absorbs all the water. Cover the dough and allow it to rest for 5 minutes. Now start kneading the dough until the dough turns soft. Your modak dough is ready.

Ukadiche Modak Recipe: Step By Step
Modak Recipe Step 1) Take a small ball size rice dough and flatten it. Now with the help of both thumbs start pressing the edges and create a furrow in the centre.
Modak Recipe Step 2) Now scoop a tbsp of prepared coconut-jaggery stuffing and dump it into the furrow.
Modak Recipe Step 3) Start creating pleats and get the pleats together to form a bundle.
Modak Recipe Step 4) Close the top by pressing and making a sharp point.

Modak Recipe Step 5) Place the modak in a steamer and cover and steam for about 10 minutes or till you see a shine appear on them.

Modak Recipe Step 6) Your ukadiche modak is ready to be served as bhog for Lord Ganesha.

Modak Recipe Tip 1) The ratio of water and rice flour has to be watched. do not add less or more water than required.
Modak Recipe Tip 2) Once the dough is formed, it may dry out while making modaks but even if the dough is dry, do not add water.
